Arthur Masuaku nets incredible freak goal as West Ham beat Chelsea in five-goal thriller despite Mas

Arthur Masuaku's amazing freak goal at the death secured a stunning 3-2 victory for West Ham over Chelsea on Saturday.

The Hammers edged a thrilling contest thanks to what appeared to be a deflected cross from Masuaku in the 87th minute, which caught Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and the entire London Stadium by surprise.

Only Masuaku will know if he meant it and replays suggest there's a chance it was deliberate.

David Moyes' side twice came from behind against an uncharacteristically sloppy Blues side, with Manuel Lanzini cancelling out Thiago Silva's early header after Mendy conceded an unnecessary penalty.

Mason Mount restored the visitors' lead with a beautiful first-time volley, before Jarrod Bowen brought West Ham level with a fierce effort from range.

But in a game full of outrageous goals, Masuaku's will steal the headlines. The left-back appeared to be lining up a cross from deep, but it deflected off Ruben Loftus-Cheek and snuck past Mendy at his near post.

The Blues goalkeeper endured an uncharacteristically sloppy afternoon - and was at fault for the first West Ham goal.

After Silva opened the scoring and cleared one off the line, Mendy was left short by a Jorginho backpass and then dispossessed by Jarrod Bowen, who was chopped down for a clear penalty.

And on commentary for talkSPORT, Dean Ashton could not understand why Mendy didn't clear the danger when he had the chance.

“Yes it was a bad back pass. He put the keeper under pressure," Ashton said.

“But there’s nothing wrong with kicking it out! This obsession with current goalkeepers who can’t see the picture of kicking it out under severe pressure."

Manuel Lanzini converted the spot-kick, but Mount quickly restored the Blues' lead with a volley from another planet.

Channelling his inner Robin van Persie, Mount hit a wonderful first-time volley past Lukasz Fabiankski after an incredible cross-field pass from Hakim Ziyech.

“I have to say, what an absolute joy of a goal to see live. Incredible!" Ashton said.

But the second-half would belong to West Ham, as Bowen equalised with a fierce effort from the edge of the box, which would've stolen the headlines on most days.

Those belong to Masuaku - and now the debate will rage on as to whether or not he meant it.

"Does he actually mean this?" Ashton asks. "I think it's a deflected cross into the box."
